Defining Business Driven MIS
Business driven MISs are information systems that give reports helping company management monitor and control business functions. They are databases of knowledge that produce these regular reports on every level of management.
Systems Thinking
System thinking is of parts that join to achieve a common purpose in a business. Company decisions are based on what emerges as these parts interact. It’s a method of not looking at each individual part but monitoring the total result. System thinking sees the forest through the trees. It’s the overall picture compiled of different angles as this video depicts. Quality philosopher Dr. W. Edwards Deming of Toyota helped develop the application of systems thinking and continuous quality improvement. This approach focuses on understanding how people do their work and how people are connected to each other when providing a service. At Toyota, using systems thinking and continuous quality improvement led to a reputation for producing defect-free products.
Internet of Things
Internet of Things is any direct communication devices wired or wireless without the need of human help. The owner of Lido Stone Works realized he had to automate his factory in order to create quality consistency and cut costs. An intelligence system was designed to connect his New York factory machines with the experts in Italy who built them. The result were immediate with decreased maintenance costs.
Strategy and Competitive Advantage
One major goal of much of business strategy is to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. What an advantage when your company has uniqueness that sets it apart from competitors! Customers prefer it to a similar product. A competitive advantage enables the firm to create superior value for its customers and superior profits for itself. The five forces in Porter’s model are the bargaining power of buyers and suppliers. Porter looks at the competition and potential profits. Why wouldn’t our MIS book. These are the essence of industry evaluation.
Summary
Whether you own a “mom and pop” store that barely keeps its head above water or you are CEO of a multimillion dollar corporation, updated information is extremely desirable and useful. The need for the most recent information arises. A big, medium or small organization, it realizes maximum benefits from investments in personnel, equipment and business processes. MIS is people oriented with an emphasis on effective and efficient services. It continuously meets the special, extraordinarily large and complex needs of a business, while it aids greatly in the attainment of business goals and objectives by providing an overall picture of a company.
